GOALS
Content Standards:
  • SC ELA Standard 6-5.4 - Create persuasive writings (for example, print advertisements and commercial scripts) that develop a central idea with supporting evidence and use language appropriate for the specific audience.
  • SC ELA Standard 6-6 - The student will access and use information from a variety of sources.

ISTE NETS-S
3. Research and information fluency: Select and use the appropriate tools and digital resources to accomplish a variety of tasks and to solve problems.

Instructional objective(s): Students will be able to research bullying, including the causes, types, effects, and possible solutions using a variety of print of resources.
ACTION
Before-Class preparation: Prior to the lesson, prepare the rubric for distribution. Create and make copies of research notecards. These copies should be made front to back so that the source information is on one side, and the information found is on the other. Schedule time in the library and a computer lab (if necessary). Create instructions for creating a wiki, including the directions for creation and set up. Wiki directions should direct one student to go to wikispaces.com and create a wiki, then invite each group member to the wiki. They should create a page for research, a page for proposal development, and a page for the project. Create research directions and guidelines. Once students have chosen their groups, the teacher will need to create groups in Edmodo.

Introduce research section of the project, including the sections that will be evaluated using the rubric. Explain the purpose of the project is to understand the causes, types, and effects of bullying to create a solution to raise awareness and reduce bullying. Explain that this solution will be presented to stakeholders (school and district administrators, teachers, other students) to evaluate for implementation in the school. Distribute copies of research notecards, and explain to students how to use them.

2.5 days
Research Part One:
In the library, students will use a variety of print resources (books and encyclopedias) to find causes, types, effects, and possible solutions for bullying. Students will use their research cards to take notes in their own words. Each day at the end of the day, students will post a summary of the information they found (with resources) to the research page of the wiki. Then students should post a daily reflection to Edmodo including a summary of what they did that day and any celebrations or issues in terms of group work.

Research Part Two:
In the computer lab, students will use a variety of resources (websites, videos, online reference sites) to find causes, types, effects, and possible solutions for bullying. Students will use their research cards to take notes in their own words. At the end of each day, students will post a summary of the information they found (with resources) to the research page of the wiki. Then students should post a daily reflection to Edmodo including a summary of what they did that day and any celebrations or issues in terms of group work.

Notes: Students will self-select groups of no more than four students to research bullying and create a plan to create awareness and reduce bullying. Students may complete research with their group (watching videos and viewing websites) or individually. If divided, group members should decide how to divide research prior to completing research individually to help focus their work and prevent duplication.
MONITOR

Ongoing Assessments: Student groups should be monitored to ensure they are focused on the task and working cooperatively in their groups. Postings to the wiki and Edmodo will be used to verify that each student is contributing to the research on a daily basis.
Accommodations and Extensions: Students can be given opportunities to respond to their group member's postings through Edmodo.
Back-up Plan: A back up lesson should be on stand-by for the days in the computer lab, in case the network goes down.

EVALUATION
Lesson Reflections and Notes: Research notecards will be evaluated to see that students are using a variety of resources. They should also be evaluated to ensure students find information about each topic (causes, types, effects, solutions). Wiki and Edmodo postings will be used to grade individual participation in group collaboration.
